Research
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Turku comprises all the basic natural sciences, mathematics and computer science. The main function of the University and the Faculty is to generate new knowledge and pass it on to new generations. One of the central goals in the development of the Faculty is to integrate teaching and research as envisaged in the Humboldtian concept of a university.
The strength of the Faculty lies in the high quality of its research in all the disciplines. In the national context, the Faculty has been rated highly in evaluations of research and teaching in mathematics and natural sciences. As examples of this high standard, faculty departments have in a highly competitive environment received nominations as Centres of Excellence in both research and in teaching and as co-ordinators of national research and teaching programmes.
