Postgraduate studies and admission

The Faculty of Science, in which the Department of Geography is included, has the right to award Licentiate and Doctoral Degrees. In order to bring variety to doctoral education, the department has developed links with various organisations, such as the Turku University Rural and Archipelago Research Centre, the Vaasa University Western Finland Research Institute, the Centre for Maritime Studies in Turku and the Migration Institute.

The department is co-ordinating the national Geography Doctoral School which comprises all geography departments in Finland. The educational and research programme for postgraduate students consist of environmental studies (the current state and environmental change), urban studies (the future development of urban areas), development studies (spatial structure, rural areas, internationalization) and theoretical studies (geographical methodology, education in geography).
