Welcome to the homepage of the Department of Geography
The Department of Geography at the University of Turku is the second oldest geography department in Finland. The Finnish-language University of Turku was founded in 1920 and geography was established as a university discipline in the autumn of 1924. The staff comprises about 20 persons, including five professors. The official language of instruction at the department is Finnish, but all the teachers also speak Swedish and English and in addition, some of them have a command of German and Spanish. Most of our students are equally proficient in foreign languages. The department frequently hosts foreign visiting professors, research workers and PhD students, and many of the teachers and PhD students have conducted research abroad.
