DEVELOPMENT STUDIES 2009-2010 University of Turku
Development Studies programme is offered by the Department of Geography. It is meant to be taken in the middle of studies when the student has already done basic studies in his/her the main subject. The programme offers a broad overview to the global development issues and to the regional differences in development. Different development theories and questions, as well as cultural, social, economical and environmental factors prevailing in the developing countries are discussed. Although the concept of ‘development’ already generally includes the idea of sustainability, the notion of ‘sustainable development’ is emphasized and elaborated.

Foreknowledge of the teaching in spring 2010
Dr. Nsubuga Haroonah from Zanzibar will give lectures on “Towards a Corruption Free Society. Fighting a Loosing Battle" 2 ETCS. Planned time of teaching is 20 – 28.4.
Recent changes to study programme:
There has been set up a Moodle area for the course India's cultural diversity and unity. The students can find the information about the course and final essay from there.
Students of Development studies have now a possibility to do their practical training in development cooperation project of Turku University of Applied Sciences in Swaziland.
Turku University of Applied Sciences (AMK) has two projects in Msunduza, Swaziland. Msunduza is an unofficial suburb of 16 000 inhabitants in the capital of Swaziland, Mbabane. AMK has been working in Msunduza from 2005, currently it has two projects concentrating on environmental health and community’s participation. Local partners implement the projects with the help of local volunteers and Finnish student interns.
The job description can be modified according to the interests and experience of the intern.

Ympäristöterveyskasvatushanke 2005-2010
Hanke on osa Salon ja Mbabanen yhteistyöhanketta Salo Mbabane Growing Together, jolla on Kuntaliiton rahoitus. Ympäristöterveyskasvatushanke toteutetaan yhteistyössä Mbabane City Councilin ympäristöhallinnon kanssa. Hankkeessa on tehty paljon ympäristökasvatusta ja kierrätykseen liittyvää valistusta, tällä hetkellä pääpaino on kierrätyspisteiden rakentamisessa ja kierrätysjätteen markkinaketjun varmistamisessa niin, että msunduzalaiset asukkaat voivat saada lisätuloja kierrättämällä jätteensä.
Msunduzan kuivasanitaatiohanke 2007-2011
Toteutetaan yhteistyössä Swazimaan Pelastusarmeijan ja Käymäläseura Huussi ry:n kanssa. Hankkeen avulla pyritään parantamaan alueen heikkoa sanitaatiota ja hygieniaa. Tavoitteeseen pyritään mm. järjestämällä koulutusta sekä rakentamalla käymälöitä. Hankkeessa rakennettujen käymälöiden soveltuvuutta alueelle seurataan ja niiden toivotaan toimivan innoittajana uusien käymälöiden rakentamiselle. Samalla pyritään lisäämään kompostoidun käymäläjätteen käyttöä kotipuutahojen lannoitteena ja edelleen helpottamaan kotipuutarhaviljelyä toimeentulon parantamiseksi. Hygienian parantaminen ja ruuantuotannon turvaaminen on erityisen tärkeää maassa jossa lähes 40 % väestöstä on saanut HIV tartunnan.
