Frequently asked questions about studying
Is there a tuition fee? How much is it?
- At the moment there is no tuition fee in the Master's Degree Programmes of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Turku. However, the costs of living are covered by the students themselves. You should have about at least 500 euros per month for living expenses as a deposit of 6000 euros/year is required also for the visa. However, the true costs of living are up from 600-700 euros/month. Still, you survive much cheaper in Turku than in Helsinki.
Is it possible to apply for a scholarship?
- Unfortunately the University of Turku does not offer or provide any scholarships.
Can I get a part time job while studying?
- Students with residence permit are allowed to work part-time, if the working time comes to an average of 25 hours per week at most. There are no limitations on working hours in full-time employment during holidays, specifically the summer and Christmas holidays. However, it is very diffucult to find part-time work in Finland if one does not know Finnish language.
When does the semester begin?
- The academic year is divided into four periods in the faculty. The dates for the academic year 2010-2011 are:
- I period 6.9.2010 - 31.10.2010
- II period 1.11.2010 - 23.12.2010
- III period 11.1.2011 - 4.3.2011
- IV period 7.3.2011 - 27.5.2011
And for the academic year 2011-2012:
- I period 29.8.2011 - 21.10.2011 (8 weeks)
- II period 24.10.2011 - 23.12.2011 (9 weeks)
- III period 9.1.2012 - 9.3.2012 (9 weeks)
- IV period 12.3.2012 – 25.5.2012 (11 weeks, no teaching around Easter on 5.4.-9.4.2012)
Some field courses etc. can be arranged outside these dates. The students accepted for the Master's programme should arrive at the beginning of September an orientation day is organized on September 2nd which is also the last day to register with the university. Courses start on the following week.
