Studying at the Department of Biology

Basic degrees in biology are the Bachelor of Science and the Master of Science. B.Sc. and M.S.c. studies are organized under three major subjects: ecology, physiology & genetics, and teacher training (consisting of studies in the two other majors as well as in pedagogics). The Bachelor's degree comprises of 180 ECTS credits and the Master's degree a further 120 ECTS credits. The Department of Biology has an entrance examination system for accepting new students for Bachelor's level studies. The annual intake of students for the degree programme is limited to 40.The language of instruction at Bachelor's level is mainly Finnish. Therefore it is necessary that the applicant is fluent in Finnish. In most cases, Finnish university students aim to take a Master's degree. The admission to the Bachelor's degree currently entitles continuation to Master's degree level. See Faculty pages for general information.

Applicants already holding a degree equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from a Finnish university (180 ECTS) may apply for Master's degree studies in English. The Faculty offers three Master's Degree Programmes, where the language of instruction is English.

The University of Turku normally only accepts students for non-degree studies under existing exchange agreements. See the Faculty pages for further information.
